1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Avalon, Mt. Field, Mt. Willey, Mt. Tom 11.7.20

With one last Saturday off before going back to working 6 days a week I needed to get in a good hike in the White Mountains. I picked this hike because it has been a while since I have been on the Willey Range and I have had this loop planned for a while. I would also be able to hike Mt. Avalon for the first time and do some redlining while grabbing that peak as well. The weather was great for November with warm temps and a gentle breeze most of the day. The hike was a total of 10.2 miles with 3,958 feet of total elevation gain.

  • The first brook crossing is the biggest. It was easy to cross today on logs and rock. There were a couple good options to keep your feet dry
  • Looking upstream from the first river crossing. There appears to be a nice little cascade up there
  • It's been 9 years since I have come down this trail and I feel like it has been rerouted in spots. In this spot where it was rerouted a tree has fallen over exposing to rock that was underneath the thin layer of soil
  • From the blown down tree there is a bit of a view up to Mt. Avalon
  • Mt. Avalon above the trees
  • Another smaller brook crossing on the trail. This one was also easy to cross without getting your feet wet
  • A small cascade where the brook crosses the trail
  • A nice easy section of trail leading up to the junction with the A-Z Trail. Most of the trail up to this point is pretty easy going
  • Signs at the junction with the A-Z Trail
  • Looking back down the trail from the junction. It was starting to get steeper shortly before the junction
  • Looking up the trail from the junction. Let the real climbing begin
  • Shortly after the junction the trail gets steep and rocky. I knew it was supposed to be steep, but I didn't think it would stay as rocky as it did. Here the trail goes up these rocks before turning left at the tree with the yellow paint marker on it
  • A brief section of mostly level trail shortly before the spur trail to the summit of Mt. Avalon
  • At the start of the spur trail to the summit of Mt. Avalon. The summit spur goes left here while the Avalon Trail continues right
  • Sign for the summit spur
  • Miles on the summit of Mt. Avalon. The Presidential Range is in view behind him
  • The Presidential Range to the north
  • Looking north from the summit of Mt. Avalon
  • Panoramic view from Mt. Avalon
  • The summit of Mt. Avalon is a small area of exposed rock that sticks up above the rest of the summit area
