Mt. Carrigain (56 of 67)

Peak 56 for this year would be Mt. Carrigain at 4,700 ft. I hiked it on 11-8-14 on a day that was started a little cloudy and became more sunny. The wind was averaging 16 mph and gusting to 19 mph. This made the 19 degree temperature become a 2 degree wind chill. The hike was 10.5 miles with 3,392 feet of overall gain and 3,572 feet of total elevation gain.

  • Starting out on the trail, there is already a thin layer of snow
  • Whiteface Brook runs right next to the trail at the start of the hike
  • Still an easy hike so far with just a short set of stone steps ahead
  • The crossing of Carrigain Brook. I went towards the right in this picture and was able to use exposed rocks all the way across
  • The now thicker layer of snow shows I am the first hiker out here since it fell. Mine are the only foot prints on these bog bridges
  • The new junction with the Carrigain Notch Trail. The intersection was moved a bit north and the trail rerouted to avoid a washed out area it had gone through
  • Trail signs at the intersection
  • After the relocated section of trail, things start the uphill climb
  • Getting a bit steeper with some rocky footing
  • Into the spruce trees now working up through a series of switchbacks
  • The trail traverses the side hill here
  • A small opening along the trail provides a view northeast towards the southern flanks of Mt. Lowell
  • Looking down into Carrigain Notch
  • Stairs Mountain (left) can be seen to the northeast
  • Climbing steadily again
  • Now up onto Signal Ridge for the first good views of the day
  • Mt. Lowell on the other side of Carrigain Notch
  • Vose Spur on the eastern side of Mt. Carrigain
  • Mt. Washington in the distance
  • Looking at the summit from Signal Ridge
