1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Carrigain (27 of 48)

The 27th mountain would be Mt. Carrigain at 4,700 ft.
This hike was approximately 9.2 miles in length and had an overall elevation gain of 3,768 ft. Plus, being winter, Sawyer River Rd is closed and required another 4.0 miles of hiking. It was hiked on 2-4-12 on a day where it snowed on the way to the trail head, and then cleared off to a mostly sunny sky in the afternoon. The temperature was 5 degrees on the summit with a windchill of -17 degrees. The wind was averaging 10 mph and gusting up to 22 mph. This was a great hike in good conditions.

  • Looking North along the side of the mountain with the Vose Spur on the right
  • Mt. Carrigain summit
  • Looking back up to the summit and the tower
  • Heading back down Signal Ridge the trail follows the edge of the ridge
  • The ridge is quite barren on the Eastern side
  • Another look back down into Carrigain Notch with less clouds this time
  • Back down in the trees below the upper switchbacks
  • A nearly full moon is already out
  • An opening in the trees looking East with the moon already getting high in the sky
  • Back down into the mostly flat sections. It is late enough in the day I have been hiking in the mountains shadow since leaving the ridge
  • A small swamp next to the trail
  • Colors of the sunset that is soon to be here in the water
  • Whiteface Brook next to the trail. Almost back to the Sawyer River Rd about 15 minutes before sunset. Just over 2 miles left to get back to the truck
