2. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Flume & Mt. Liberty (16-17 of 48)

The 16th and 17th mountains would be combined into one trip with the first being Mt. Flume at 4,328 ft and then Mt. Liberty at 4,459 ft.
This hike was approximately 8.6 miles in length and had an overall elevation gain of 3,078 ft.
They were hiked on 9-11-11 for the 10th annual Flags on the 48 Event. The temperature wasn't too hot and it was a bit windy at times which made it so you didn't get to hot and sweaty. It was mostly cloudy, but the sun came out briefly at times and most of the summits were out of the clouds.

  • Starting off on the Whitehouse Trail and going under a damaged tree
  • Onto the bike path briefly to get over the river
  • A set of stone stairs on the Liberty Spring Trail
  • Junction with the Flume Slide Trail
  • An early brook crossing on the Flume Slide Trail
  • This trail can be a bit tight with brush, but gives a great feeling of being all alone out in the woods
  • Some foot bridges to keep you out of the mud that need some work
  • At one of the crossings on Flume Brook
  • The start of the slide and the long steep climb up to the summit
  • A small view out from the Flume Slide Trail
  • Looking at the texture of the underside of the clouds
  • Looking back down the Flume Slide Trail from the small viewpoint
  • Looking up the trail. It was lots of smooth steep slick rock like this for quite some time
  • Another bit of a view towards Mt. Moosilauke
  • Looking down the trail again
  • Not as smooth and slick, but still steep and rocky
  • When the large rock faces weren't in the trail, plenty of other rocks still were
  • Finally up to the top of the trail, to the ridge, and almost at the summit
  • Mt. Liberty just up the ridgeline
  • Looking down from the mountain into the lower part of Franconia Notch
