1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Hale (26 of 48)

The 26th mountain would be Mt. Hale at 4,054 ft.
This hike was approximately 4.4 miles in length and had an overall elevation gain of 2,266 ft. Plus, being winter, Zealand road is closed and required another 5.5 miles of hiking. It was hiked on 1-15-12 on a day where it was partly cloudy with just a light breeze. The temp when I started was -9 degrees and on the summit it had dropped to -13 degrees. Back to the truck at the end of the hike it was finally above 0 at 3 degrees. This was a good hike in very cold conditions. Not many other hikers, but there were a fair amount of cross country skiers on the road.

Ready to start out, going to be a cold one

  • Ready to start out, going to be a cold one
  • Starting up the Zealand road
  • Mt. Hale up ahead
  • Looking up the road to the destination
  • After a little more than an 1 hour, I reached the Hale Brook Trail
  • Map of the area at the trailhead kiosk
  • Ready to head up the trail
  • Gentle uphill to start on packed snow
  • Down low in the hardwoods
  • A limited view over to Mt. Oscar through the trees
  • A small brook next to the trail
  • A brief flat secion in the trail
  • A small view over an old logging cut just off the side of the trail
  • Heading back up the trail
  • Following along the side of the hill for now
  • Hale Brook crossing on the trail
  • This was a gorgeous little spot on the trail
  • Head steadily uphill again
  • A nicely packed out trail to follow
  • This was a nice section of trail traversing the sidehill on a narrow path. Poor footing would make for an easy slide here
