1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Hale (26 of 48)

The 26th mountain would be Mt. Hale at 4,054 ft.
This hike was approximately 4.4 miles in length and had an overall elevation gain of 2,266 ft. Plus, being winter, Zealand road is closed and required another 5.5 miles of hiking. It was hiked on 1-15-12 on a day where it was partly cloudy with just a light breeze. The temp when I started was -9 degrees and on the summit it had dropped to -13 degrees. Back to the truck at the end of the hike it was finally above 0 at 3 degrees. This was a good hike in very cold conditions. Not many other hikers, but there were a fair amount of cross country skiers on the road.

Into the softwoods now

  • Feathery snow on a downed tree at a turn in the switchbacks
  • Here the trail moves side to side around some covered rocks
  • Into the softwoods now
  • Getting close to the summit now
  • Snow is caked on all of the trees
  • Snow and ice build up on the branches up high
  • Nice fresh powder next to the trail
  • At the open summit finally
  • There used to be a firetower up here
  • Nice clouds seen behind the summit cairn
  • Remains from the old fire tower
  • The summir cairn
  • Looking out over the Hale Brook Trail
  • The Lend-A-Hand trail heading off towards the clouds
  • Heading back down the trail trying to build some body heat back up
  • Getting back into a mix of hardwoods and softwoods
  • Back down to the Zealand Rd
  • Zealand River next to the road. Mt. Oscar in the distance
  • One of the groups of skiers
  • Back out to the main highway, just a quarter mile to the parking lot
