1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Jefferson 9.14.2013

On 9-14-2013, I hiked Mt. Jefferson (5,712 ft) as part of Flags on the 48, a memorial hike in honor of 9/11. I hiked with the same team as last year, including a few more as well. The hike was a total of 4.91 miles with 2,661 feet of elevation gain using the Caps Ridge Trail. Other than one brief 15 second view of Mt. Washington from near the summit of Mt. Jefferson, we were in the clouds the entire time. The wind was blowing enough to keep both the United States and Boston flags that we were flying out straight the entire time. With clouds blowing past and occasional rain, things stayed pretty wet and I therefore didn't take many pictures. It was still a good hike with a good group of people

At the summit, getting the pole ready for the US flag

Jefferson9329

  • At the summit, getting the pole ready for the US flag
  • Tying support lines to the pole before putting it up
  • We also had a City of Boston flag from a Boston Police Officer. Luckily, we noticed quite quickly that we initially put it up the wrong way
  • The US flag flying proudly in the clouds at the summit of Mt. Jefferson
  • A couple posing in front of the flag
  • The wind was enough that they flag stayed out the entire time
  • The Boston flag barely visible through the clouds/rain on a sub peak only about 200 feet away
  • Some of our group and some other hikers near the summit
  • Still staying straight out in the wind
  • Activity at the summit
  • The sun trying to come through the clouds, unsuccessfully. Still difficult to see the Boston flag over there
  • Looking up at the flag from our spot tucked away out of the wind
  • More hikers visiting the summit and the flag
  • Time to pick up the flags. Notice the Boston flag is now correct
  • Brian getting the flag under control while Jim comes up to untie the rope
  • Still trying to get the flag under control
  • Descending in the clouds, this was one of the small scrambles the trail goes over
  • A little closer look. The height of this scramble was about 6 feet
  • The trail following along the side hill for a bit. Jim can be seen coming closer carrying his flagpole
  • On the descent, rocks were even more slick and the ascent earlier in the day thanks to continuous rain and being in the clouds
