1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Mansfield (67 of 67)

The 67th and final peak for my goal of the New England 67 in one year would be Mt. Mansfield at 4,393 ft. I hiked it 1-24-15 which was the last possible day of the time frame I gave myself. The day started off with some clouds and became more sunny as it went on. The wind was averaging 9 mph with gusts of 11 mph which made the summit temperature of 24 degrees feel like 13. The hike was 6.13 miles with 2,860 feet of overall gain and 3,113 feet of total elevation gain.

The Adirondacks to the west

  • Looking southeast towards Stowe
  • The open summit ridge heading to the north
  • The Adirondacks to the west
  • The base of the ski area
  • Looking south over the summit ridge as another hiker takes a picture as well
  • Looking south over the ski area
  • More of the open summit area
  • Miles on his 67 summit within one year
  • Mountains on the other side of Smugglers Notch
  • Geological Survey marker at the summit
  • Other hikers heading down from the summit
  • Part of the great view from the summit
  • Skiers have made a path up from the top of the ski area. I decided to head down that way rather than over the icy ledges to the north or back down the steep Profanity Trail
  • Looking west from the junction with the Profanity Trail
  • Looking up towards the summit
  • Looking up towards the summit
  • Looking back up the skier's route to the summit
  • I hiked down the ski trail for a short distance before heading back into the woods onto the Long Trail (ask ski patrol first before doing this)
  • Following the skiers tracks/trail back down the mountain
  • An easy to follow route back down
