1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Monroe 12.13.18

Knowing the weather for today was expected to be clear and calm, I took advantage of not having much to do and hiked Mt. Monroe (5,372 ft). I went up the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail to the hut and then the Monroe Loop to the summit. On the summit it was 15 degrees with just a 5 mph wind, which made it very enjoyable. There were also almost no clouds at all. The hike was a total of 6.94 miles with 3,051 feet of total elevation gain

  • The first brook crossing on the Ammonoosuc Trail. Solidly bridged with ice
  • Looking upstream at the crossing
  • Looking back at the trail at the junction with the old trail that leads to the the base of the Cog Railway
  • A sign reminding hikers that the hut is closed for the winter season. This is the most direct and common trail leading to the AMC Lakes of the Clouds Hut
  • The Ammonoosuc River from the junction
  • A closer look at the snow covered trees that have fallen across the river
  • Continuing up the trail near the river
  • A blown down up ahead that is next to the trail
  • From a spot where the trail gets next to the river, the first glimpse above treeline
  • View from the trail while next to the Ammonoosuc River
  • Down low the trail was pretty hard packed. It was a bit too choppy and narrow for snowshoes, so I still wasn't wearing them yet
  • A better look up the ravine to the flanks of Mt. Washington
  • A closer look
  • The Gem Pool. The water flows down into it on the right side where the break in the trees is
  • From Gem Pool, the trail gets steep for the next mile. Gaining 1,500 feet in elevation over that distance
  • A brief break in the steep climb
  • Climbing into a winter wonderland
  • Snow caked trees
  • A nice view to the northeast from the trail
  • The ridge on the other side of the ravine
