1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Moosilauke 09.08.2012

For my first revisit to Mt. Moosilauke, I decided it would be for Flags on the 48 on 9-8-12. An annual flying of the USA flag on all 48 four thousand footers in memory of 9-11-01. The group I went with ascended up the Gorge Brook Trail and came back down the same way. The hike was 6.65 miles with a total elevation gain of 2,286 ft. On the summit it was 59, cloudy, and with winds averaging around 28mph and gusting up to 36mph. We didn't have good views, but the flag was always out fully extended.

Our group stopped just after the second foot bridge

Moosilauke2024

  • Our group stopped just after the second foot bridge
  • The first of the log foot bridges
  • Group discussion and picking on each other
  • Just after crossing back onto the east side of Gorge Brook
  • A good place for a rest and regroup
  • The first viewpoint. We were completely in the clouds for the hike up
  • A great view... of the clouds
  • Heading up one of the more open spots of woods
  • The edge of the second viewpoint, still just clouds
  • The trail leaving the viewpoint
  • A couple of our group members taking a break
  • Coming up to treeline
  • Nearing the summit. It's up there somewhere
  • Starting to figure out a plan of attack for raising the flag
  • A few other hikers at the summit when we showed up
  • Checking pole placement
  • Starting to secure the pole
  • Starting to tie the pole to the rocks around the summit post
  • Flag in flight and a group member posing for a goofy shot
  • Flag is raising and fully extended
