Mt. Moosilauke (6 of 67)

Peak number 6 of 67 peaks for this year would is Mt. Moosilauke in NH at 4,802 ft. It was hiked on 4/24/14 where the conditions on the summit were in the open, but just under the clouds. Winds were averaging 39 mph and gusting up to 52 mph which made the 23 degree temperature have a windchill of 2. The hike was 7.61 miles with 3,442 ft of vertical gain. Trails used were the Glencliff Trail, South Peak Spur and Carriage Road

  • The first intersection comes early. Here the Hurricane Trail heads off to the right
  • The first and "most difficult" water crossing of the day. It was easy to use the rocks on the left to get across and keep my feet dry
  • Early sections of trail are pretty smooth and climb at a moderate grade
  • At times, the trail would have short bursts of steeper terrain
  • At approximately 2900 ft in elevation, the snow and ice started on the trail
  • It was interesting to see how all of a sudden it went from no snow and ice to having a solid base of it
  • A little bit of ice with water under it where I put on my microspikes
  • Only a few hundred feet after the snow started on the trail, there was a long section of solid ice the covered the entire trail. This is an early section of it
  • A solid snow base/monorail on the trail
  • There were some spots on the trail where multiple trees have blown over during high winds
  • Another group of fallen trees
  • Getting higher up the mountain, ice is now starting to be present on the trees as well
  • The ice on the trees is thin, but present
  • The firm monorail of snow is more present now and sticking up a little bit above the rest of the snow
  • Just after the steepest section, the trail levels out some just before the junction with the Carriage Road
  • More ice and rime is on the trees now
  • Some interesting rime formations starting on the trees
  • On the South Peak Spur. This is where I stopped (mostly out of the wind) to put on dry layers and to add my jacket
  • Part of the open area on the South Peak
  • Trees around the South Peak summit are covered in rime
