1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Pierce, Mt. Eisenhower, & Mt. Jackson 3.7.20

With a great weather forecast and limited weekends remaining to claim mountains as "winter peaks" it was time to check some mountains off the list along the Presidential Range. I started up the Crawford Path to Mt. Pierce, then went out and back to Mt. Eisenhower. After getting back to Mt. Pierce it was still early enough and I was feeling good enough to add on Mt. Jackson. This made for a great loop on a great day except for some strong winds above treeline. The hike was a total of 11.8 miles with 4,911 feet of total elevation gain.

  • The bridge crossing Gibbs Brook just before the Crawford Connector intersects with the Crawford Path
  • Heading up the Crawford Path was a gradual hard packed trail
  • Microspikes were great for going up the smooth packed highway of a trail
  • Sun shinning on the snow next to the trail
  • Signs at the intersection with the Mizpah Cutoff
  • Some traffic has been up/down the Mizpah Cutoff
  • Most of the traffic has continued up the Crawford Path
  • The Crawford Path was originally built as a trail for horses so it stays pretty gradual for its entire length
  • A sign next to the trail warning hikers that they are entering the Alpine Zone. The ecosystem here is much more fragile (even in winter), so please follow the rules when hiking here
  • Almost to treeline
  • Snow clinging to the needles of a tree next to the trail
  • The gorgeous view from the summit of Mt. Pierce. The Crawford Path comes out of the trees a few hundred feet from the summit
  • Mt. Eisenhower (the dome on the left), the next peak for the day. Mt. Washington (with the towers) can be seen in the background with Mt. Monroe (triangle shaped peak) just in front of it
  • Mt. Eisenhower. The summit cairn can be seen sticking up on the top
  • The view to the southwest from the summit of Mt. Pierce. Other peaks can just be seen over the trees with the snow covered Franconia Ridge just noticeable as well
  • Some of the trees at the summit of Mt. Pierce. Part of why I like this peak so much is that it has some trees and feels a bit like a wooded peak while still being on the edge of the treeline and providing excellent views up the Presidential Range
  • View to the east from the summit of Mt. Pierce
  • Hiking above treeline on the Crawford Path heading to Mt. Eisenhower
  • Mt. Eisenhower and beyond clearly in view
  • An interesting snowdrift along the trail
