1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Tecumseh (1 of 67)

My hiking goal for 2014 is to hike all 67 of New England's 4000 footers. A little bit of a slow start for the year put Mt. Tecumseh (4,003 ft) up first on 1-25-14. The hike was a total of 4.97 miles with 2,398 feet of elevation gain. A cloudy day became even cloudier as it started to snow as I neared the summit. The temperature on the summit was 5 degrees with the 3 mph breeze (6 mph gusts) made for a wind chill of -3. The trees blocked most of the wind, so it could have been worse

  • The summit of Mt. Tecumseh lies on the right behind the main lobby of Waterville Valley
  • The start of the trail. Only 2.5 miles to the top
  • At the very start of the trail is an easy brook to cross using the rocks to stay out of the water
  • At the start of the hike, the Tripyramids could be seen across the valley. As the day went on, snow showers moved in and views went away
  • A short distance up the trail, a yellow arrow directs you across the Tecumseh Brook
  • Still slowly gaining elevation in the open hardwoods
  • A view of the ski area through the trees
  • The summit can also be seen through the trees
  • Now entering into the conifers while still with an easy grade
  • Coming up to the second crossing of the Tecumseh Brook
  • The brook crossing was easy with rocks, logs, and thick enough ice to walk across
  • Looking upstream of the Tecumseh Brook
  • After the last crossing and a small icy section, the trail starts its steady climb up
  • The train continuing its steady climb as the trees close in a bit more
  • Getting higher up on the mountain, snow is now sticking to the trees more
  • The last stretch up to the ridge line between the summit and ski area. This is the steepest stretch and the last bit where you are still protected from the wind today
  • Finally up onto the ridge. The Mt. Tecumseh Trail comes up and over the mountain from the ski are base while the Sosman Trail connects the summit to the area at the top of the ski lifts
  • Now up on the ridge, the trail becomes more gradual again
  • Miles the mountain monkey finally comes out of the pack to help me choose which way to go to the summit. He chose to go left here at one of my favorite signs in the mountains. The trail splits, going both directions, but joins back up at the summit
  • The sign after Miles hopped back into my pack out of the wind
