1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Tecumseh 2.17.2013

With today's forecast I decided to hike a shorter peak that doesn't go above treeline or have much for views. Mt. Tecumseh is 4,003 ft. tall and today's hike was 4.9 miles with 2,169 feet of overall elevation gain.
The weather was cold and very windy. The trees lessened the affects of the wind, but snow was still blowing around creating drifting conditions up high.
The summit temperature was 2 degrees with a windchill of -14. In the trees at the summit the wind was blowing an average of 10 mph with gusts to 15 mph. You could tell that without the coverage of the trees it would have been much faster

  • The trail starts at the Waterville Valley Ski Area near the main lodge. The summit can be seen barely through the clouds behind the lodge
  • The start of the trail near the edge of parking lot #1
  • The first brook crossing is all of 30 feet from the start. It was an easy rock hop to get across though
  • Further up the trail, the first major brook crossing. Completely snow bridged luckily
  • After crossing the brook, the trail now starts a short steady climb
  • Leveling out some while still in the hardwoods
  • Now starting to head into the conifers
  • The trail is still following a gentle uphill grade at this point
  • A brief dip in the trail as you come to the second major brook crossing
  • A dip in the trail at the crossing of Tecumseh Brook
  • After the brook crossing, the trail soon becomes mostly straight, wider, but also steeper
  • The trail through here has seen some ski/snowboard traffic
  • Continuing for what seems like quite a distance mostly straight and uphill
  • The summit can be seen partially through the trees as you continue up
  • Eventually the trail turns more to the right and away from the ski slopes
  • Now meandering left and right a bit, the trail still stays pretty steep shortly before the ridge
  • One of my favorite signs in the White Mtns. The trail splits shortly before the summit with both directions meeting back up on top
  • The split in the trail with the Sosman Trail heading left and Mt. Tecumseh Trail continuing right
  • Another look at the intersection
  • First hiker this far up the mountain today. Time to break through some snow drifts
