1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Waumbek (25 of 48)

The 25th mountain would be Mt. Waumbek at 4,006 ft.
This hike was approximately 7.2 miles in length and had an overall elevation gain of 2,550 ft.
It was hiked on 12-24-11 on a day where the sun was shinning after some early morning cloud cover. The temp when I started was 7 degrees and on the summit it had warmed up to 8.5 degrees. Back to the truck at the end of the hike it was 16 degrees. There was almost no wind. It was a great hike with some gorgeous views. Nice to be hiking in winter conditions again. This was the second hike within a week where I didn't see any other hikers.

  • When I pulled into the trailhead, I was the first one there
  • A fresh deer crossing with a few sets of tracks across the trail
  • Some of the deer tracks. Notice the smaller track inside of a larger one
  • Heading up the trail at a gentle incline
  • Following an old logging road, the trail stays pretty straight and gentle
  • A growth on a tree next to the trail
  • A little bit of a view out through the trees
  • A ridge on the mountain to the north
  • Still heading straight up the mountain
  • Now off the logging roads and over some more rocky terrain
  • All of a sudden, the trail heads into the softwoods at a well defined line
  • Looking back through the hardwoods
  • In the softwoods, the trail turned into a bit of a tunnel
  • Heading up a steeper incline
  • Looking out into the trees
  • A tree caked with snow
  • In the softwoods, the trail follows along the side of a ridge
  • A small glimpse back through the trees to Franconia Range
  • At the summit of Mt. Starr King
  • View to the Southwest from a rock at the summit of Mt. Starr King
