2. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Waumbek 08.23.2012

The first mountain I would revisit would be Mt. Waumbek. This time Melissa would come with me. Mt. Waumbek is 4,006 ft high and the hike up was 6.6 miles with a total elevation gain of 2,756 ft. It was hike on Aug. 23, 2012 on a sunny, humid, and hazy day. Temps were around 80 at the base and there was almost no breeze. Once up into the conifers on the mountain it seemed less hot and humid and wasn't bad hiking. The haziness made the views not at good as the last time I was here, but still not too bad.

  • The start of the trail leaving the small parking lot
  • After a stretch on an old logging road, the trail turns off into the woods still not getting overly steep
  • There are some roots and rocks in the trail, but nothing too bad
  • Some of many Indian Pipes next to the trail
  • Once we noticed these Indian Pipes, we saw that they were all over the place
  • Into the conifers higher up on the mountain, the trail gets more rocky
  • Melissa ready to get back hiking after a rest at the spring
  • The old chimney near the summit of Mt. Starr King
  • The chimney is remnants of an old shelter that was once at this site.

  • Trying to get a better view to the north by climbing up onto a blown down tree
  • The trail between the peaks is lined with ferns much of the way
  • Just past the actual summit of Mt. Waumbek is a nice viewpoint
  • Mt. Madison (left) and Mt. Adams (right). The Madison Spring Hut could be made out in the saddle between the two
