1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Waumbek (25 of 48)

The 25th mountain would be Mt. Waumbek at 4,006 ft.
This hike was approximately 7.2 miles in length and had an overall elevation gain of 2,550 ft.
It was hiked on 12-24-11 on a day where the sun was shinning after some early morning cloud cover. The temp when I started was 7 degrees and on the summit it had warmed up to 8.5 degrees. Back to the truck at the end of the hike it was 16 degrees. There was almost no wind. It was a great hike with some gorgeous views. Nice to be hiking in winter conditions again. This was the second hike within a week where I didn't see any other hikers.

  • The trees on the summit of Mt. Starr King
  • Just after leaving Mt. Starr King for Mt. Waumbek, I cam across some fresh moose tracks. They didn't have any snow in them from the accumulation last night or from the wind yet this morning
  • My hand above the track for a sense of scale. The tracks were good sized
  • After going only 20 feet the moose tracks were back in the trail headed away from me. The moose did a U turn and was now taking longer strides. I think he heard me coming. Now I am on the look out
  • Snow covering a small tree next to the trail
  • Looking out through the trees from the trail between the peaks
  • The mountains to the North
  • The moose is still leaving tracks up the trail away from me. The tracks coming towards me show it wandering on and off the trail looking for food
  • Heading uphill getting closer to Mt. Waumbek
  • This was one of the places the moose came out of the trees when it was heading towards Mt. Starr King. Not much room for an 800 lb animal between the branches
  • Moose hair left behind from all the branches
  • Trail sign at the summit of Mt. Waumbek

  • The moose finally went off the trail and down into a blowdown area
