1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

North Twin Mtn 3.9.2013

Having been almost 4 months since I have been able to hike on a sunny day, with a great forecast for today I was heading somewhere with a view. I decided that today it would be North Twin Mtn with a plan to also hit South Twin Mtn. A tiring week leading up to the hike changed the plans to just North Twin as my body was too tired to comfortably do both peaks. But with views like this, it was still a great hike.
North Twin Mountain is 4,761 ft. tall and today's hike was 10.15 miles with 3,173 feet of overall elevation gain.
The weather was perfectly clear and sunny with temps near freezing on the summit and in the 40s down below. Wind was pretty calm making the hike quite comfortable.

  • At the end of the Little River Rd, there is a bridge you cross to get to the path to the summer trail head. The path is on the left immediately after the bridge
  • The path to the summer trail head is almost a straight line
  • The path was well packed from other hikers and skiers
  • Just before the bridge at the summer trail head, the path comes up out of the trees
  • After a one mile warm up, I am at the summer trail head. Now starting into a valley, the sun is hardly poking over the ridge
  • The trail parallels the river on the eastern side (heading south)
  • The layer of snow and ice over the water was about 3 feet thick. But some spots are still open
  • The first river crossing appears to have seen no traffic this winter. Everyone seems to be taking the bushwhack instead
  • The second crossing coming back to the eastern side of the river. With no one taking the first one, no one has taken this one either
  • The third river crossing is the only one you need to do this winter
  • The river had a solid snow bridge crossing it next to the fallen tree that sometimes is used in warmer months
  • Early morning on what is a beautiful day
  • The North Twin Trail is a little wet in summer. This creates some low spots in the snow on trail where small work around are needed
  • Heading up hill into the trees on the North Twin Trail
  • A turn in the trail getting higher up on the mountain
  • Looking back down the near the last steep pitch. The snow is so deep, you need to duck under the snow laden branches
  • Starting the last steep pitch before gaining the ridge
  • Coming up onto the summit ridge
  • From the summit view point, looking southwest
  • Looking south over to South Twin Mtn
