1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Old Speck Mtn. (32 of 67)

The 32nd of 67 peaks for this year would be Old Speck Mtn (4,170 ft) in Maine. It was hiked on 8/10/14. The entire hike was 6.325 miles with 2,716 ft of overall elevation gain and 3,038 ft of total elevation gain. From the summit I could see two rain storms in the area with one eventually coming over the mountain. Just after reaching the trail head, the rain picked up more and I started to hear thunder

Shortly after picking up and leaving the campground I was staying at, I drove past this moose on the side of the road. She was at a spot with water next to the road. By the time I got turned around and got the camera out, she was ready to head out

  • Shortly after picking up and leaving the campground I was staying at, I drove past this moose on the side of the road. She was at a spot with water next to the road. By the time I got turned around and got the camera out, she was ready to head out
  • Here she turns as she gets ready to go through a hole in the trees that appears to get used a lot to access the waterhole
  • Looking up at "The Eyebrow" from the parking lot
  • The trail starts off pretty gentle and easy
  • Very quickly though, the trail gets steep
  • Metal posts with a cable have been installed as hand holds in this steep section. With today's dry conditions, I didn't need them
  • A bit further up the trail crosses over and open rock slab that could be quite slippery when wet. A couple rungs on the left lead you up to a better part of the rock to cross. More rungs are added for you to grab hold of while crossing
  • After crossing, you then go down the rock over a few more rungs to reach a ladder that goes up over the steep rock and into the trees
  • The view from the rock slab crossing
  • In the woods, another steep spot has rungs to help you climb
  • These rungs made good steps. Body positioning would have been a bit awkward to use your hands on them
  • The trail comes out onto some rock near the edge of the cliff
  • From the trail, you get this nice view into Grafton Notch
  • The summit of Old Speck can be seen up ahead on the left
  • Coming towards the end of the Eyebrow Trail
  • Back onto the main trail, you pass through a sections that goes over open rock but is still in the trees
  • Looking further up the trail
  • I really enjoy the sections of trail like this
  • Blueberry bushes next to the trail. Unfortunately there were no blueberries though
  • Heading further up the trail. Still on exposed rock, but a much narrower path of it
