1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

East Osceola & Mt. Osceola (60-61 of 67)

Peaks 60 and 61 for this year would be East Osceola at 4,156 ft and Mt. Osceola at 4,340 ft. I hiked them on 12-21-14 on a day that was cloudy and only cleared up slightly by the time I was back to the car. The wind was averaging only 2 mph which made the summit temperature of 19 degrees quite bearable. The hike was 7.82 miles with 2,351 feet of overall gain and 3,338 feet of total elevation gain.

  • The Greeley Ponds Trail was an easy gradual ascent to the Mount Osceola Trail
  • Trail signs at the start of the Mount Osceola Trail
  • The start of the Mount Osceola Trail
  • You can already see the eastern flank of the mountain through the trees
  • Early parts of the Mount Osceola Trail are pretty easy and go through some tight feeling sections of woods
  • Someone appears to have started a bushwhack right here. Not knowing of anything special in the area, it seems kind of random. The orange ribbon makes me wonder if it is a route that others have used to go somewhere before
  • Continuing through the trees on an easy to follow path
  • This is where the climbing really begins
  • Early part of the steep climb up onto the ridge
  • This doesn't look like much, but it's a steep open section along the trail with no real good footing to follow
  • No good footing on the right or anything to help pull yourself up with
  • On the left there was some better footing thanks to previous hikers. You could also use the trees to pull yourself up with or as resting spots
  • A short easy section before more climbing
  • The trail crosses what appears to be an open rock slide. It's hard to tell what's under the snow though
  • Looking out into the clouds from the rock slide area
  • At the top of the steep climb is a side path that leads to this view through the trees. That's the summit of East Osceola ahead
  • A better view of the limited view point
  • Snow on the trees here has accumulated similar to how rime ice does
  • Heading up the ridge to the summit of East Osceola
  • The wooded summit of East Osceola is marked by this cairn on the side of the trail
