1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

East Osceola & Mt. Osceola (60-61 of 67)

Peaks 60 and 61 for this year would be East Osceola at 4,156 ft and Mt. Osceola at 4,340 ft. I hiked them on 12-21-14 on a day that was cloudy and only cleared up slightly by the time I was back to the car. The wind was averaging only 2 mph which made the summit temperature of 19 degrees quite bearable. The hike was 7.82 miles with 2,351 feet of overall gain and 3,338 feet of total elevation gain.

The trail coming up to the summit opening

  • Miles on the summit cairn
  • The trail heading down off of the summit towards Mt. Osceola
  • The trail gradually working down into the saddle between the peaks
  • The Chimney at the start of the climb up Mt. Osceola. Looks like no one has been up it recently (and for good reason looking at the ice at the top)
  • The standard bypass for the chimney doesn't look all that good either. There is a tight winter bypass of the bypass through the trees to the right
  • A gradual climb through snow covered trees
  • The open area at the summit of Mt. Osceola. Actually, the high point is a bit further up the trail, but not by much
  • The square block here is part of the remains of an old fire tower that once stood here
  • Looking back towards East Osceola. Honestly, it's just behind the clouds in that direction
  • Some of the trees around the summit clearing
  • A closer look shows some icicles as well
  • The trail coming up to the summit opening
  • Miles found a nice spot to sit at the summit tucked out of the wind
  • Miles in his padded seat within a tree
  • Clouds fill the sky above the trees around the summit clearing
  • One edge of the summit clearing drops off overlooking the valley below. Today, it just provides a look into the clouds
  • Heading back over to East Osceola. Just above the chimney
  • The summit of East Osceola is still in the clouds
  • Looking up the ridge as it heads into the clouds
  • Heading up the trail going back up East Osceola
