1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Owl's Head (28 of 48)

The 28th mountain would be Owl's Head at 4,025 ft.
This hike was approximately 15 miles in length and had an overall elevation gain of 2,890 ft. It was hiked on 3-4-12 on a day where temps were just below freezing on the summit and the wind was relatively calm with only occasional gusts. It started to snow lightly in the late afternoon and picked up after dark while I finished the hike back out to my truck by headlamp. This was a long hike even with the common shortcuts. Going up the slide that is the Owl's Head Path rather than the common bushwhack proved to be quite hard and very time consuming.

  • The Lincoln Brook Trail follows mostly along the edge of the brook
  • Looking back down Lincoln Brook
  • The trail on the brook's edge
  • Fresh snow on Lincoln Brook
  • The trail heading away from the brook and into the trees for a bit
  • The Lincoln Brook Trail gently gains elevation for the entire length of it
  • Up next to the main mass of Owl's Head finally
  • Crossing Liberty Brook which feeds into Lincoln Brook
  • Finally, after 6.8 miles, I am at the Owl's Head Path. There is no official trail up this mountain, so many people follow the same somewhat beaten path up
  • The first half of the path is up an old rock slide. While this is quite steep, it was actually the easiest part of it
  • View back across the valley from the slide. Little Haystack, Mt. Liberty, and Mt. Lafayette
  • One of multiple times going sidehill across the slide. Notice the angle compared to the trees
  • Finally back into the trees and off the slide. Not many pictures were taken on the slide as there wasn't many safe spots to take off my pack and do so
  • Sign at the "old summit" telling you to go further. About 10 years ago, hikers determined that a spot about a quarter mile up the ridge of the mountain was 10 feet higher than this spot
  • The herd path leading to the "new summit"
  • At the summit, there isn't much for a view
  • Trying to look through the trees at the Bonds to the East. They are a little hard to see due to the trees and the fact that it had started to snow
  • Mt. Liberty to the West through the trees and snow
  • Franconia Ridge to the West
  • Heading back down Owl's Head. With no official trail, the path isn't very wide
