1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Passaconaway & Mt. Whiteface (29-30 of 48)

The 29th and 30th mountains would be combined into one trip with the first being Mt. Passaconaway at 4,043 ft and then Mt. Whiteface at 4,020 ft.
This hike was approximately 10.5 miles in length and had an overall elevation gain of 4,145 ft.
They were hiked on 3-31-12 which started off cloudy with a chance of flurries. Between the peaks all of the clouds cleared off and it turned out to be a gorgeous day. Temperature on the summits was right around freezing and there was almost no wind at all.

Shortly after leaving the parking lot, ready to turn up the Wonalancet Range Trail

  • Shortly after leaving the parking lot, ready to turn up the Wonalancet Range Trail
  • The hike started off pretty gentle. This is where I spooked two deer that went quickly running off
  • At the boundry of the Sandwhich Range Wilderness
  • With no leaves on the trees yet, you can see the nearby peaks through the trees
  • A section of trail that crosses over plenty of large rocks
  • An ice flow next to the trail as it gets steeper heading up Mt. Wonalancet
  • A little bit of ice in the trail too, but not bad
  • To avoid the extra distance and needless up and down, I used the Wonalancet Range Trail Cutoff
  • Early on, the cutoff runs right next to this smooth rock face
  • Back on the Wonalancet Range Trail, now only one set of tracks in the snow on the ground from a previous hiker
  • A side path leads to this lookout from a small ledge. From here, you are just above Mt. Wonalancet
  • Looking down through the valley. The lower end of the fields in the picture is where the parking lot is just over 2 miles of hiking back
  • Looking down over the edge of the ledge
  • Coming to a small opening on Hibbard Mtn with a limited view west into The Bowl
  • There was plenty of old moose sign here. Since some of the poop has been frozen over in a puddle, it has been a while since it was here.
  • Mt. Whiteface across the bowl. The summit isn't the hump on the left as it looks like from here, but the gradual hump just to the right after the dip
  • Looking up to Mt. Passaconaway
  • Coming down the Walden Trail from Wonalancet Hedgehog, there is a brief view up to Mt. Washington and the presidential range
  • While it is cloudy right now, the clouds are pretty high still giving views
  • Zooming in on Mt. Washington with the big lens I am borrowing
