1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Pierce & Jackson May 2015

A college friend and one of her friends came to NH for a week and wanted to do some hiking. The southern presidentials were picked so that we could stay at the AMC Mizpah Hut overnight during its spring self service season. Day 1 was up to the hut and then Mt. Pierce. The hike was 5.11 miles with 2,602 feet of total elevation gain. Day 2 was a hike over Mt. Jackson and then back to the cars. This added another 5.12 miles and 803 feet of elevation gain. The weather was great with warm temps and plenty of sun. But there was still 3+ feet of snow along the ridge in places which made for some slow going

• Mt. Eisenhower on the left, Mt. Washington in the back, and Mt. Monroe on the right blending in just in front of Mt. Washington
• Mt. Eisenhower with the northern presidentials behind it
• Presidential Range
• View to the north
• View north from the summit of Mt. Pierce
• The trail heading back into the trees towards the hut
• The summit cairn on Mt. Pierce is about 4 feet tall, but today it's just barely sticking out of the snow. Normally it looks like this
• Coming back down into the woods with the snow already seeming softer than when we ascended
• The plank on the left is where the trail normally is. Right now it's about 3-4 feet higher due to the snow
• Just after leaving the hut for day 2, we came across where a moose postholed through the woods
• The moose also went up the trail a bit before turning back and heading off into the woods again
• The trail between the hut and Mt. Jackson hasn't seen a lot of traffic this winter, so the monorail wasn't as firm or as easy to find
• Coming out into an open spot
• I expected this patch of snow directly in the sun to be soft and mushy. It was actually surprisingly firm
• Mt. Jackson can be seen up ahead
• At the first, and smaller, of the two bogs
• A view up to Mt. Washington from the bog
• The second, larger bog and the bridge leading over it
• The bog bridges are head up by log cribbing that goes quite a ways down into the mud
• Mt. Jackson isn't too far now
