2. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Spaulding & Sugarloaf (17-18 of 67)

Peak numbers 17 and 18 of 67 peaks for this year would be part of a second weekend trip to Maine. The peaks would be Spaulding Mountain (4,010 ft) and Sugarloaf Mountain (4,250 ft). They were hiked on 6/29/14 where the conditions were mostly sunny and clear all day that was also a bit warm and humid. The hike was 9.853 miles with 3,499 ft of vertical gain.

Sugarloaf4433

  • This looks vaguely <a href="http://sdways01.smugmug.com/New-England-4K/Crockers-Redington/">familiar</a>. I parked here yesterday as well
  • The river crossing at the start of the hike is made easier by this plank added between some rocks. It even has a cable attached to it to keep it from floating too far away in high water
  • After an easy section slowly leading away from the river, the trail heads uphill more and gets rockier
  • The trail follows a side hill before turning straight up it then back in the other direction along the side hill again
  • With the steep climbs in this section, some views can be had early on in the hike
  • Yesterday's peaks can now be seen
  • South Crocker and North Crocker across the valley
  • Mt. Redington tries to hide off in the distance
  • An attempt at showing how steep this section is by showing how quickly the trees drop off and the view opens up
  • The trail pops out of the trees for a bit as it follows the edge of a cirque in the mountain side
  • The view back to the Crockers
  • The other side of the cirque shows a few old small rock slides
  • Looking up Caribou Valley
  • Back into the trees on an easy section of trail. Just after I put my camera away, a rabbit came hopping down the trail towards me. It turned around before I could get the camera back out
  • This snake slithered out of the way to get back into the sun
  • Trail sign at the intersection with the trail heading up Sugarloaf Mountain
  • Another sign at the intersection
  • The open area at the intersection
  • Leaving the intersection the trail is pretty flat
  • Continuing along the ridge was a mostly gentle trail
