Spaulding & Sugarloaf (17-18 of 67)

Peak numbers 17 and 18 of 67 peaks for this year would be part of a second weekend trip to Maine. The peaks would be Spaulding Mountain (4,010 ft) and Sugarloaf Mountain (4,250 ft). They were hiked on 6/29/14 where the conditions were mostly sunny and clear all day that was also a bit warm and humid. The hike was 9.853 miles with 3,499 ft of vertical gain.

  • What, you don't normally come across random plaques in the middle of the woods?
  • The plaque attached to the rock
  • After a steep incline, the trail starts to go around the side of Spaulding Mountain
  • A short side trail leads you up to the summit of Spaulding Mountain. This summit sign is off by only 22 feet compared to the map. At least all the discrepancies aren't big

  • A short side path from the summit leads to this view back towards Sugarloaf Mountain
  • The Bigelow Peaks can be seen behind the flanks of Sugarloaf Mountain

  • Back onto the AT coming down Spaulding. This is part of the steep section heading up from the ridge
  • A few parts of the trail were pretty narrow and could use some brushing
  • Other parts of the trail had trees that had blown over during high winds
  • Sugarloaf summit in sight, but still a good distance away
  • This form of bog bridge isn't seen all that often, but is quite effective
  • Back to the intersection with the trail to the summit of Sugarloaf. Only 0.5 miles to the summit
  • The side trail to the summit starts off steep though
