1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Wildcat D & Wildcat Mtn (64-65 of 67)

Peaks 64 and 65 for this year would be Wildcat Mtn. D Peak at 4,062 ft and Wildcat Mtn. A Peak at 4,422 ft. I hiked them on 1-2-15 on a day that was cloudy with steady and gusting wind. The wind was averaging 18 mph with gusts of 27 mph which made the summit temperature of 7 degrees feel like -14. The hike was 8.69 miles with 2,500 feet of overall gain and 3,580 feet of total elevation gain.

  • Looking up the mountain from the parking lot. Looks like there won't be much for views
  • For $10, you can get a pass that allows you to hike up the ski trails rather than taking the longer and possibly more dangerous (in winter) hiking trails
  • The ski trail rounding a corner I just came through
  • Plenty of skiers out today even with the light snow and winds
  • At the top of the chairlift where I was really starting to get the full effects of the wind today
  • Looking over where the trail heads into the woods descending towards Glen Ellis Falls
  • The route I want to take
  • I bypassed the summit platform and will stop there on the way back. This is already heading down off of Wildcat D Peak towards A Peak
  • Looking over towards Wildcat Mtn (A Peak) from the trail
  • In the trees, the trail was quite firm so I took off my snowshoes and put on Microspikes so I could go faster
  • Heading up one of the steeper climbs along the trail between the peaks
  • One of the steeper climbs between the peaks
  • The trail going over a small rise in the ridge. It felt kind of tight through here with branches on both sides of the trail needing a bit of trimming
  • A small open piece of trail in the trees
  • Getting closer to Wildcat Mtn
  • A short descent before a gradual ascent to the summit
  • The view over to Carter Dome from Wildcat Mtn (A Peak)
  • "The Ramparts" (rock slide area) on Carter Dome
  • Carter Notch Hut can be seen down by one of the ponds
  • Miles perches on a tree for his summit photo
