1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Willey, Mt. Field & Mt. Tom (11-13 of 48)

The 11th, 12th, and 13th mountains would be combined into one trip with the first being Mt. Willey at 4,285 ft, then Mt. Field at 4,340 ft, and then Mt. Tom at 4,051 ft.
This hike was approximately 10.5 miles in length (including getting back to the truck) and had an overall elevation gain of 3,574 ft.
They were hiked on 7-7-11 which started off cloudy and foogy but quickly turned mostly sunny with temps on the mountain in the 60s and around a 15mph wind. All in all a great for hiking with not too much other traffic on the mountains

  • It was still a little cloudy in the notch when I left the Willey House Site
  • I started by heading up the Kedron Flume Trail
  • Before long the trail crosses the RR tracks
  • The first half of the Kedron Flume Trail isn't too steep or hard
  • A nice straight pine tree that I thought was pretty big. After some of the other trees I came across further up, it wasn't so big
  • The trail crosses Kedron Brook at Kedron Flume
  • Looking up into Kedron Flume
  • Looking down the brook at Kedron Flume
  • View out from the brook
  • There isn't much water in the brook to cross over
  • A 12 inch thru tree that uprooted next to the trail. With all the rock underneath, it is surprising any trees stay up
  • Looking back down the trail. The tree sticking up on the right is the tree that uprooted in the previous picture
  • At the junction with the Ethan Pond Trail looking up the trail
  • The Ethan Pond Trail can be rocky, but was a nice break after the steep climbs of the Kedron Flume Trail
  • Now on the Willey Range Trail, we start heading up again
  • Bark on a birch tree next to the trail
  • This section is steeper than the picture shows and is a washed out ditch
  • A series of steps made from fallen trees
  • Only maybe the first half of a steep ladder climb
  • The ladders working up the steep hillside
