1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Zealand Mtn. (49 of 67)

The 49th peak in my quest for 67 in one year would be Zealand Mountain. A good peak to do on a cloudy day as it doesn't have much for views. The hike was 12.6 miles with 2,221 ft overall elevation gain and 3,095 ft total elevation gain. It was cloudy to start, but cleared up partially later in the day. It was 38 degrees on the summit with very little wind

Gentle section of trail early on along the Zealand Trail

  • Gentle section of trail early on along the Zealand Trail
  • One of the nice bridges along the trail
  • When I got to Zealand Pond, there was a beaver swimming around
  • The open rock area of Zealand Falls can be seen behind the pond
  • The beaver was swimming in circles as I stood on the shore taking pictures. He seemed to be waiting for me to leave and even tried slapping his tail a couple of times to encourage me
  • The open rock area is Zealand Falls and just to the right you can make out part of the roof of the hut
  • Zeacliff is easy to see behind the pond
  • Now onto the easy grades of the Ethan Pond Trail and the old railroad bed it follows
  • Where the Zeacliff Trail turns off, you enter the Pemigewasset Wilderness area
  • Looking south down through Zealand Notch
  • Looking north up through Zealand Notch. Zeacliff is on the left
  • Behind the trees at the bottom of the notch is a small river
  • My route is basically straight down into the bottom of the notch then straight up the hill on the other side until up near the ridge then turning right
  • Whitewall Brook was easier to cross than I expected with these large rocks to cross on
  • Heading up an early rocky section of the Zeacliff Trail
  • While rocky, this section of trail was pretty easy to navigate
  • Still heading up steeply, but now turning a bit more to the north
  • Just above this section there were 4 separate Spruce Grouse that flew off as I got near each of them
  • Now following the ridge a bit more towards Zeacliff and going through a small patch of birch trees
  • One of the obstacles of the trail. The path goes along the bottom of the rock to the far side where you then have to use small holds to pull yourself up and over
