Abandoned Road - Dublin, NH

This abandoned road crosses the eastern most section of Howe Reservoir in Dublin, NH. Most of the year the road is under water with only a single culvert partially exposed at most. But in the winter when the water gets drained down, the old road becomes more visible. I explored the road and part of the bordering Brewster Forest about a week before the reservoir started being filled back up

  • The old stone and concrete culvert is the most prominent feature of the old road
  • With the water levels low the old road can be seen crossing the reservoir. The brook that helps fill the reservoir runs through it now as a small stream
  • Looking closer at the old road from a distance. This picture is taken from the side on NH Route 101 which passes by the reservoir
  • The old road leading across the reservoir from the south eastern side of Route 101
  • The road leading across the reservoir
  • I walked out along the old road to get closer to the most prominent feature, an old culvert. Today the brook running through was only about 6 inches deep and was easy to cross with tall waterproof boots
  • The old culvert is concrete poured over top of some larger rocks with a decorative rock finish on the outside edges
  • A decorative finish where the water would have passed through
  • The concrete arch of the culvert was well formed, but the rest of it appears to have been mostly poured over top of a stone base
  • Looking from the other side of the culvert with Route 101 in the background. People who use boats/kayaks here periodically have to the replace the stick the is pointing up here from inside a small pile of rocks. With normal water levels this is normally just below the water surface and you wouldn't want to run into it
  • The structure has broken apart some over the years
  • The road continues across the reservoir and into the trees
  • Fresh deer tracks in the mud along the old road
  • Most of these dark spots are older deer tracks. Perhaps they use the road as a more solid surface to get to the water for a drink
  • Looking from one shore to the other. My boot prints can be seen leading across the old road
  • Following the road into the woods
  • The old road is still in good condition
  • A fork in the road. I choose to go left here as I wanted to end up in that direction anyways
  • A small brook flows under the old road in the woods. This small cascade was right next to the road
  • A small cascade in a brook that crosses the old road
