Ramage Paper Mill

The Ramage Paper Mill in Monroe, MA first opened in 1887 and ran up until 1996. Paper manufacturing started under the ownership of James Ramage, but by the 1920s the mill was owner by the Deerfield Glassine Company. In the 1970s this became Deerfield Specialty Paper and they operated the mill up until 1996. At that time the current owner purchased the property, but did not do much with the mill and soon stopped paying taxes. The town ordered them to tear down the rotting green wooden portion of the structure, but the didn't respond and now the town is planning to do so themselves. That portion of the building is in poor shape and there is concerns about pollution/contamination if the building or it's foundation were to fall into the river.

  • The concrete and brick portion of the mill is in much better condition, but is still deteriorating itself
  • A platform on top of the mill. We joked that this would have been the helicopter pad. Based on size and some remaining wire insulators on the railing, it's more likely some sort of equipment or electrical transformers were placed up there
