Mourne (Mt.) Diablotin

Mt. Diablotin is the highest mountain on the island of Dominica at 4,747 ft. It is also the highest point in the Eastern Caribbean. Our first full day on the island, we tagged along with another guest at our resort for a climb up. The other guest got ahead of us and our guide and made it to the summit. We got close, but the terrain was difficult enough that we decided we got close enough for it to count. The trail we took was a little more than 1.5 miles, but gained 1,800 ft of elevation and took 3 hours.

  • We were able to have a small snack on wild raspberries before hiking. They were similar to the ones we have around here in the States, but still different in a couple ways
  • Looking up the road that the parking area is on. There was only enough room to park two or three cars
  • The sign at the start of the trail
  • Carlos (our guide), John (other resort guest), and Melissa (my wife) heading up the steps on an early section of trail
  • Heading up even more steps
  • It leveled off some for a bit in the middle, but started to get thicker. The flag/ribbon tied onto the tree is the trail marker
  • View from the first outlook where most climbers stop. The trail after this is much less traveled
  • The hump up ahead is the actual summit. This was the second outlook we stopped at. While the summit was only 0.2 miles and 46 ft of elevation away, it would have taken an hour to get there and back to this spot. We decided since there was no view there, we would call this close enough
  • View North from the second outlook
  • Portsmouth on the Northwestern coast of the island
  • Vegetation where we stopped for lunch and to turn around. This stuff has lots of branches that went in all directions making it hard to get through
  • Northern edge of the mountain as the clouds are passing around us
  • A valley we were overlooking at the second viewpoint
  • Yes, this is just what the upper sections of trail are like. We had to take our packs off to be able to crawl through some places
  • A flower back near the trailhead that is still wet from the quick shower we got while coming down
